The Most Unique, Custom Barn Doors in the East Kootenays

This summer, James built what we think are the most unique, custom barn doors in the East Kootenays. Or maybe the world. Who knows? These beauties are three-dimensional, made of metal and wood, and they spin.

To give you the full low-down on how they came to be, here’s James:

I asked Liz, the customer, what she wanted in a barn door. She shrugged and said, “Well, I like bicycles. So maybe something with bicycle wheels.” That sounded like a cool challenge, and I knew it’d go really well in her house. She has a few tables and pieces of art featuring bikes.

Liz found some old, rusted bike wheels. They were kind of broken, so I took them apart, played around with the bearings, and somehow got the spinning mechanism working again. I thought it would be fun if we could get the wheels spinning when they were attached to the door. I spray painted the parts black and reassembled the wheel.

The door itself it a flat MDF slab. I painted it white to give a good contrast to the black wheels. We found a bike pedal for the handle, which I also painted black.

I thought it’d be difficult to attach the wheel to the door so it could still spin, but it turned out to be pretty straightforward, and it looked really good. Liz was stoked when she saw it. She loved it, and she said I didn’t need to do renovations anymore—I should just make barn doors for a living.

I loved this door, too. It’s a lot of fun when customers bring their ideas to me, and we work together to make a personal and unique barn door.

I was lucky that Liz had an unusual idea. If customers aren’t sure what they want, I tell them to go on Pinterest and look at pictures there. It’s a useful resource for inspiration when you’re not sure what you want. It’s also helpful for me to see those pictures and understand what they’re imagining.

Barn doors add a ton of character to a home. They’re fun to make, too. There are so many designs, options, and sizes. You can adapt them to almost any house, as long as you have the wall space. They don’t take up much room.

Here are some pictures of Liz’s unique, custom, spinning barn doors.
